For many young Aliso Viejo residents, e-bikes are a staple mode of transportation to where they need to go.Like any mode of transportation, can be safe or hazardous depending on

various factors such as user behavior, local regulations, and infrastructure. When used responsibly and in accordance with traffic laws, e-bikes can provide a convenient and environmentally friendly transportation option. However, issues may arise if users engage in

reckless behavior, fail to follow safety guidelines, or if there are insufficient regulations and infrastructure to accommodate e-bikes. This unfortunately is the case for many teenagers who ride e-bikes. Personally I have seen many cases where e-bikers do not follow basic traffic rules, such as red lights, stop signs, and they sometimes do not even stop for cars. It's important for users to be aware of their surroundings, wear appropriate safety gear, and adhere to traffic rules. I knew a friend of mine who had an accident with an e-bike who was severely injured and had to be hospitalized due to a car hitting him while he was using an e-bike. To enhance safety, there is a need for clear regulations governing e-bike use, including speed limits, where they can be ridden, and how they interact with other road users. Public awareness campaigns about

responsible e-bike use, coupled with investment in infrastructure such as dedicated bike lanes, can contribute to safer conditions for e-bike riders and others on the road. I think that developing

training programs for e-bike riders, similar to traditional bicycle safety courses, and emphasizing proper riding techniques, awareness of surroundings, and understanding the nuances of

electric-assisted bikes can reduce the risks of injuries while young people are on e-bikes. Implementing and enforcing clear regulations regarding e-bike usage, including speed limits, age restrictions, and where they can be ridden can contribute to safer practices. As the Aliso Viejo Youth Council we can work with e-bike manufacturers to ensure that their products meet safety standards and provide clear guidelines for proper use. This may include recommendations on

speed, maintenance, and battery safety.
